"I'm fine." Most of us have said it when we were not. Sometimes we do not want to worry anyone. Sometimes we are afraid of being judged, or we simply do not have the words yet.
Why it is hard to open up
- Fear of being seen as dramatic or weak
- Worry that adults will overreact
- Not being sure what we are feeling
- Not knowing who to trust
Ways to start
- Choose a calm moment and a person you trust.
- Begin small: "Can I talk to you about something? It has been on my mind."
- Write it down first if speaking feels too hard, then share the note.
- Use a feelings word: stressed, lonely, overwhelmed, angry, sad.
- Tell them what helps: "I do not need you to fix it, I just need you to listen."
If the first person does not help
Try someone else. A different parent or guardian, an aunt or uncle, a teacher, the school counsellor or a faith or community leader may respond in a way that feels better. Your feelings are still valid.
Keep checking in with yourself
Once a day, ask: "How am I really feeling?" Naming it, even privately, is a powerful first step.
